oloBion Supports a New Phase of Metabolomic Analysis in the GenRisk Project Led by IDIBELL

GenRisk

The colorectal cancer research group led by Dr. Víctor Moreno at IDIBELL continues to advance the GenRisk project, an initiative aimed at identifying genetic and molecular factors associated with cancer risk and progression, with the goal of improving patient stratification and deepening the biological characterization of the disease.

GenRisk is a large-scale, multi-institutional initiative supported by a €500,000 grant from the Scientific Foundation of the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) and coordinated by Dr. Víctor Moreno. The project is part of the CIBERESP program (CIBER of Epidemiology and Public Health) and brings together a consolidated consortium of 15 translational research groups across 12 Spanish provinces. It builds on the MCC-Spain epidemiological study, which recruited over 10,000 participants, including 6,008 patients with common cancers (colorectal, breast, stomach, prostate, and chronic lymphocytic leukemia) and 4,098 population-based controls. Alongside epidemiological and dietary data, biological samples were collected to enable in-depth genetic and metabolomic analyses.

The overarching goal of the project is to improve cancer prevention through personalized strategies. By integrating genetic, molecular, and lifestyle data, GenRisk aims to move beyond age-based screening approaches toward more precise risk prediction and early intervention, ultimately reducing disease burden, social impact, and healthcare costs in an aging population.

In this new phase, the team has initiated an advanced analysis of the metabolomic data previously generated within the framework of the project. Metabolomic analysis enables the comprehensive characterization of small-molecule profiles present in biological samples, providing functional insights associated with different clinical profiles and disease states.

As part of this stage, oloBion contributes its advanced analytical platform oloMAP to support the re-evaluation of the GenRisk metabolomic dataset. oloBion is a laboratory specialized in metabolomic and multi-omics analysis using mass spectrometry, based at the Barcelona Science Park and with scientific collaboration with the University of California, Davis. Through oloMAP, a structured re-analysis of the dataset is enabled, facilitating rigorous comparative analysis between clinical groups and the identification of metabolic patterns associated with disease presence and profile.

This collaboration reflects oloBion’s commitment to supporting research groups such as Dr. Moreno’s team at IDIBELL in maximizing the scientific value of metabolomic data, contributing to the adoption of advanced analytical approaches in the molecular study of cancer.
